Though this rocky ridge may resemble a stone fence, it was not constructed by humans. It was actually formed by the forces of nature.

About 15,000 years ago, the glaciers from the last Ice Age began to retreat from this area. When they melted, two huge lakes, Algonquin and Nipissing, were created. They covered this area, reaching depths of 1,500 feet. As water levels dropped and the lakes shrank, their original shorelines were left behind, forming the ridge you see here.

Eventually lakes Algonquin and Nipissing shrank and split up into the Great Lakes we know today, including Lake Michigan.

Hidden Wildlife
Turn your attention to the forest floor. This mature woodland provides habitat to many ground-dwelling creatures like ovenbirds and fox snakes.
