Aquatic insects spend part or all of their lives in the water. These bugs feed and breathe like land-dwelling insects do, and have developed adaptations to survive in this environment.

Aquatic insects are important to the health of a wetland. They act as water filters, break down and recycle plant material within the ecosystem, and are food for many other animals.

Dragonflies

Dragonfly larvae are aquatic and can take up to three years to turn into an adult. These insects are natural hunters and have excellent vision. While we humans have a single lens for each eye, dragonflies have over 30,000!

Water Boatmen

Water boatmen’s legs have evolved for life on the water. Each of their three sets of legs is adapted for a specific task. The front are used as a scoop for food and the back serve as a set of oars to glide across the water. The mid pair have adapted to make a special squeaking sound that helps attract mates.

Whirligig Beetles

Whirligig beetles get their name from their habit of swimming in tight circles on the water’s surface. They do this as a defense mechanism when they feel threatened. Whirligigs are hunters and have split eyes that allow them to see both above and below the water.
