This boulder is a traveler. It is a glacial erratic-a rock that has been picked up by glaciers and dropped in a new place. Erratics are different from the bedrock native to the area where they rest. They have often been carried long distances, and tell the story of a glacier’s movements. Scientists can use these rocks to learn which direction glaciers moved and when they melted.

This erratic likely came from Canada, and was left behind when the glaciers retreated north after the last Ice Age. Now that you are familiar with these special stones, search for other glacial erratics around Door County.
