1008 - The Wonderful Wetland

"Wetlands are places where the soil is covered by water either seasonally or year-round. This creates a unique environment that offers both aquatic and land-based habitats. Many species thrive in these conditions, making wetlands one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world.
Wetlands are vital to the health of humans and the Earth. As many as 400 million people throughout the world rely on wetlands for food, flood control, and clean water. Wetlands also filter water and trap carbon, making them climate stabilizing champions!
What kind of wetland is this?
This wetland is a bog—wet, spongey ground made of dead plant material. It is surrounded by a low, flat area called a sedge meadow that is covered by grass-like plants. Sedge meadows are common in areas affected by glaciers during the last Ice Age, like Door County."
