Throughout the years, a few things in Cavalier County have become synonymous with summer. From bicycle rides and cannonballs to s’mores around a campfire, the long, warm days of the season are cherished and time spent outdoors is never wasted. In Munich and Langdon, the soundtrack of summer also includes the crack of a bat and cheers from the ballpark as another run crosses home plate.

Much of the region is rooted in small-town community sports and has been for many years. In Munich, the Magicians tee ball program exists for children between the ages of four and 7, instilling in them a love of the game early on. Back in the day, Munich’s high school baseball team claimed a couple state titles, which is always a source of pride for communities. Adam Wirth, a former local baseball coach, recalled how the older fields weren’t nearly as nice as they are today, and as a little leaguer, he and his teammates would have to pick buckets of rocks off the field in order to minimize the risk of the baseball taking a bad hop for the older high school players! An unfortunate incident that could end up costing you the game!

For years, a friendly rivalry was stoked between Langdon and Munich high schools. While they have since formed a co-op team, the rivalry lives on between an older generation of softball players. Each year, the Munich Legacy Tournament takes place and the fiery competitiveness returns. The winning team earns the Traveling Trophy and the opportunity to host it at a local establishment. It is not uncommon to see the winning team driving through nearby communities while holding the trophy out the window and honking the horn, fueling the fire for the following year's competition, all in good fun, of course.
