Not too far from the Tetrault Woods State Forest Overlook is another opportunity for you to take in the wonders of the Pembina Gorge. The Masonic Overlook, located in the picturesque town of Walhalla, offers an ideal vantage point, especially in the spring and fall months, when the valley is brimming with colors. At an elevation of 1,155 feet above sea level, the vista gives you a birds-eye view of the forested gorge and the Pembina River below. While at the overlook, keep your eyes peeled for elk, wild turkeys, deer, ruff grouse, black-necked pheasants, and moose, all who have found the Pembina Hills to be a haven. Though don’t be fooled by one particular elk at the Overlook! He, along with a companion moose standing near the center of town, were created by a local artist.

Besides the scenic views and life-size elk sculpture, the Masonic Overlook also offers a viewfinder and benches, some sourced from the nearby historic Kittson Trading Post. A trail from the overlook leads you two hundred feet down to the Pembina River, with plenty of options for a spot to roll out a blanket and unpack your picnic basket. Located a short distance from the Rendezvous Region Scenic Backway, the Masonic Overlook and vista is a beautiful site, its majestic views worthy of a visit!
