The Tetrault Woods State Forest is located in the Pembina Gorge, along the banks of the Pembina River, one of North Dakota’s most scenic rivers. The forest, established in 1970, covers over 430 acres and provides a diversity of forest, water, and wildlife resources. Burr oak, ash, elm, birch, and aspen trees, many older than the forest itself, fill the valley. The forest is home to moose and some elk, as well as a variety of birds and plants.

The Tetrault Woods State Forest has something for everyone. The forest has trails for hiking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. For a slightly different perspective, you can explore the forest from the water. Canoeing and kayaking on the Pembina River brings you up close and personal with the forest as you meander through the tranquil valley.

The Tetrault Woods State Forest Overlook is an unmissable stop during a visit to the Pembina Gorge. While the panorama at the overlook is beautiful regardless of the season, autumn is an extra-special time to visit. Imagine the golden, amber, and scarlet leaves blazing across the landscape, the sound of the breeze rustling through the drying leaves, the crisp air carrying the unmistakable scent of fall. Other times of the year are also magical. In the spring, you can watch the valley come to life from the overlook. During the summer, the sun reflects off the trees, creating a kaleidoscope of greens. Winter may seem bleak, but the bare trees are blanketed with glittering snow, portraying a quiet, majestic state of rest. All this and more can be seen and felt from the spectacular Tetrault Woods State Forest Overlook.
