The Pembina County Museum is also home to a living exhibit, a community orchard that exists because of collaboration between area youth and the museum. Community orchards are a growing trend all across America. Not only do these orchards beautify the land and grow healthy food for the community, they are also a valuable tool for hands-on learning that encompasses agriculture and nutrition through classes and workshops.

Filled with trees, bushes, and pollinator plants, the community orchard really comes alive in the summer months. Lush, green foliage and bright blooms are a sight to see. Listen carefully and you may hear the tap tap tap from an American woodpecker, the high pitch call of a rose-breasted grosbeak, or the buzz of a bee.

The community orchard at Pembina County Museum is the result of hard work and dedication by local volunteers, It was initially funded in 2016 by a grant awarded to the Pembina County Historical Society from North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. Commitment and collaboration have led to the success of this community orchard, which provides a place for gardening, relaxation, healing, and education.
