1128 - Coyote and Fox

Narrated by Pearl Laravie
Coyote said to Gray Fox, “You are very fat.”
The Coyote said, “Younger brother, what has made you fat?”
“Older brother,” said the Gray Fox, “I lie down in the road in the way of those who carry food, and I act like I’m dead. Then, they throw me into the wagon, and I lie there kicking the food out. Then, I jump out and start home while eating the food. It is all the food that has made me fat, and, older brother, you can do the same. You have large feet, so I think you can kick out a lot of food.”
So, Coyote went to the place and lay down in the road. When the wagon came along full of food, it stopped, and a white man threw the Coyote into the wagon. The white man thought, “A Gray Fox has gotten away before!” So, he tied the feet of the Coyote and went to his home.
Then, when he got home, he threw the Coyote out. Thinking the Coyote was dead, he got out his knife and cut the rope to free the Coyote’s feet. The white man threw the Coyote over his back and started to the house. But, the Coyote got loose and ran home.
When he got home, he found the Gray Fox. “Oh, younger brother,” said the Coyote, “you have made me suffer.”
The Gray Fox said, “You should blame yourself! Be silent and come to me. You brought trouble on yourself, trying to get all of the food.”
Coyote said, “Younger brother, you tell the truth.”
