543 - Pioneer Overlook Park

Pioneer Park is a hub of activity for visitors, especially in the summer months when sand volleyball matches are happening and the playground is filled with children. The walking trail takes you along the Missouri River, but you may need to weave around Canadian Geese on your trek! But, have you considered the history in this place? From this vantage point?
Just to the south, you’ll catch a glimpse of the historic Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Bridge, a cultural landmark of both architectural and historical significance. Built by the Northern Pacific Railroad Company from 1880-1883, this monumental engineering achievement was the first bridge to span the upper Missouri River and contributed significantly to the growth of the railroads.
During the summer, keep an eye on the river, as you may see the Lewis and Clark Riverboat passing by. Dusk is an exceptional time to visit Pioneer Park as the sunset coupled with the view of the river are legendary.
Perhaps the most recognizable sight at Pioneer Park is the Rising Eagle, a sculpture based on an interpretation of the Thunder Beings. The surrounding circular-shaped wall encompassing Rising Eagle represents the Earth. The movement of the wings, it is said, creates the thunder that we hear while brief glances of the tail feathers is the lightning that we see. Rising Eagle speaks directly with Wakan Tanka and delivers our prayers to our creator.
