Can a small, rural Minnesota community produce a nationally known product of superior quality while maintaining a diverse and stable workforce? It can if you are talking about New York Mills – home of Lund Boat Company.

G. Howard Lund graduated from New York Mills high school in 1930 and later attended Dunwoody Institute, studying mechanical drafting, machine design, and sheet metal layout. During World War II Howard worked in a California shipyard before moving back to his hometown to open a sheet-metal shop.

An avid duck hunter, Howard was having a hard time finding a decent duck boat and decided to build one himself. In 1948, a passerby spotted the homemade aluminum boat strapped to the roof of his car and stopped to ask about it. He was a salesman for the Inland Marine Corporation of Minneapolis and was so intrigued, he asked Howard if he could build more.
Naturally, Howard said yes, and accepted an order to build 50 aluminum duck boats. From this chance meeting, the Lund Boat Company was born.

Still headquartered in Howard’s hometown, Lund Boats is an integral part of the history of New York Mills. Known for their quality, Lund Boats are often handed down from generation to generation – and resale value is one of the highest in the boating industry.
New York Mills is proud to be the home of Lund Boats, offering customers worldwide the Ultimate Fishing Experience.
