Have you ever wanted to travel back in time? Here, at Daniels County Museum and Pioneer Town, you can do just that! Just west of Scobey, Montana, well off the beaten path, the town seems eerily deserted, a turn of the twentieth century town frozen in time. With over 35 buildings on twenty acres, you are able to travel back in time by meandering the streets of this historically preserved pioneer town.

While pictures are able to give us a glimpse into the past, a visit to Pioneer Town allows you to really immerse yourself in the early 1900s. The preserved buildings, such as the one-room school house, the old general store, a blacksmith’s shop, movie theater, gas station, post office, and old churches have been developed, restored, fully furnished, and decorated to match the period. Also on the property is the Daniels County Museum, home to many artifacts, chuckwagons, machinery, and old cars that tell the story of long ago.

The Pioneer Town really comes to life one weekend every summer during Pioneer Days, a celebration of the past in northeast Montana. One of the highlights of the event takes place in the Rex Theatre, home to the Dirty Shame Show, a variety show featuring comedy skits, sing-alongs, local talent, and the Dirty Shame Belles and Dixieland Band, a foot-stomping, heart-pounding good time.

Another highlight of Pioneer Days is the Threshman’s breakfast, a nod to Scobey’s history as one of the largest shipping points of grain in the country. Harvest time meant early mornings and long days toiling in the hot sun. Cook carts would come into the fields to serve food to the workers. During Pioneer Days, these same cook carts are back at it, serving up pancakes and sausages!

After Pioneer Days, the town gets quiet, though guided tours are available during the summer months. Whenever you choose to visit, the Daniels County Museum and Pioneer Town are worth the trip off the fast lane!
