Over a hundred years ago, this area was bustling with excitement, the hope of striking gold pulsed through the mountains, enticing prospectors to the Little Rockies. Today, there is much to discover in the scenic Little Rocky Mountains and the Camp Creek Recreation Area offers a perfect homebase for immersing yourself in the history of this mining mecca and the mountains that surround it.

This heavily-timbered, isolated mountain range rises abruptly from the surrounding plains, a shocking intrusion that provides habitat for a unique mix of mountain and prairie wildlife. Birding is one of the most common wildlife-viewing adventures that visitors partake in at Camp Creek Campground. Known as a Watchable Wildlife Area, it is part of the Northeastern Plains Birding Trail and brings you up close and personal to red-naped sapsuckers, red crossbills, Clark’s nutcracker, prairie falcons, sparrow hawks, golden eagles, and bald eagles. Though don’t just keep your eyes fixed to the sky or you may miss the badgers, coyotes, porcupines, antelope, mountain lions, mule deer, and the elusive bighorn sheep who also call this area home. Though an encounter with a mountain lion might be something you want to miss!

Camp Creek Recreation Area can be explored on a system of trails that lead from the campground into the wilderness. Whether you are a hiker looking for peaceful solitude or an adrenaline enthusiast with a passion for fast all-terrain vehicles, there’s a trail for you at Camp Creek. When the sun sets on your outdoor adventure, you can sleep under the stars in the quiet campground. While Camp Creek Recreation Area is in a remote area of central Montana, there are several small bass and trout fisheries nearby, as well as opportunities for hunting and gold panning.
