When you envision fishing in Montana, you most likely imagine babbling streams surrounded by towering pines and snow-capped peaks, jewel-blue mountain lakes, or the big reservoirs and prairie rivers of Eastern Montana. In your mind’s eye, you likely don’t picture anything like Home Run Pond, a little spot of man-made fishing in Sullivan Park on the edge of Glasgow. A local gem for the community, what makes Home Run Pond extra unique is the fact that it’s only open to anglers fourteen and under, many who cruise to the pond on their bikes with fishing rods draped over their shoulders. Though fishing isn’t the only attraction here. For those looking to explore the great outdoors, a stroll down the adjacent Sullivan Trail might be just the ticket!

The story of Home Run Pond began in 2003. Located near the baseball complex – hence the name – it was initially a stocked rainbow trout pond. That all changed in 2011 after the nearby Milk River swelled way beyond its banks, engulfing the entire complex. The invading waters displaced native fish and once the water receded, some were left in Home Run Pond. It’s now possible to hook a variety of fish including the stocked rainbow trout, channel catfish, yellow perch, crappie, and bullhead. At about a half-acre in size and outfitted with benches, a wheelchair-friendly platform, and an asphalt walkway, Home Run Pond is the perfect setting for young fishermen. Events are hosted here throughout the year, such as the Youth Ice Fishing Festival and children’s fishing clinics held during the spring and summer months, all geared towards introducing the sport of fishing to youngsters. And some day, many of the kids who reeled in their first catch in Home Run Pond will grow up to fish those gurgling streams, crystal clear mountain lakes, large reservoirs, and winding rivers that have given Montana a reputation for world-class angling.
