595 - Andrea Ficek Falcon - Prairie Flora

Andrea Ficek Falcon is a Bismarck-based artist and musician whose work helps shape the region’s public art landscape. A founding member of the Bismarck Downtown Art Cooperative, she has been involved in creating and supporting spaces for art in the community. This piece, Prairie Flora, reflects her connection to nature and place.
From the start, I knew I wanted to create something with flowers. I’ve always loved plants. When I learned the Bismarck Professional Women were supporting the project, it made me think about the women who’ve shaped our state. Rather than painting portraits, I chose flowers as a way to represent femininity and resilience. They thrive here in North Dakota, just like the women I hoped to honor.
The inspiration came from flowers in surrounding areas, taking photos of many plants, from wildflowers like prairie roses and coneflowers near my family farm in southwestern North Dakota to black-eyed Susans in my neighbor’s garden. The figure in the mural isn’t anyone specific; I drew inspiration from Native American women as a way to honor the original stewards of the land. Her hair winds through the flowers, tying together nature, women’s resilience, and our local identity.
Working on the brick was a process. The built-in grid helped, sketching directly on the wall with a Sharpie, freehand, piece by piece, rather than projecting an image. Painting on public walls transforms spaces. These murals make art accessible because people can see them when they’re driving by or walking through the alley. Especially in the long gray winters, it brings color and vitality to the city.
I hope the mural can transport people to nature, even in the city, and inspire them to take a moment to appreciate and respect the Earth. For young artists, my advice is simple: you can do it. Just jump in! Murals may seem overwhelming, but mistakes can always be painted over. It’s an exciting opportunity to create something large, vibrant, and meaningful. That’s what Prairie Flora is to me: a celebration of life, resilience, and our connection to this place.
