Walking this alley behind Main Street in Mandan, from First Avenue NW to Second Avenue NW, reveals a space that has been intentionally transformed. The Mandan Art Alley Project is a partnership between the City of Mandan, the Northern Plains Heritage Foundation, and the Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation. It is a public art initiative designed to turn an underutilized alley into a vibrant, interactive space in downtown Mandan.

Phase One launched in Summer 2025 and resulted in sixteen murals, including one designed and created by the community to directly engage residents in both the design and painting process.

The goals of this project are to celebrate community stories, foster civic pride, create a welcoming space for residents and visitors, and showcase local and regional artistic talent.

As visitors move through the alley, themes are reflected throughout the murals. These include honoring Indigenous traditions and contemporary expressions, recognizing the Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, and Dakota nations. The murals also reflect waves of immigration and cultural convergence, as well as connections to land, water, and community, including the Missouri River and the Northern Plains landscapes. Additional themes highlight shared histories, contemporary connections, and a focus on the future through youth, innovation, and cultural continuity.

This project demonstrates how art can transform an overlooked space into a welcoming destination. Visitors are encouraged to explore the alley, take in the murals, and experience the connections they create.
