740 - Wind Farms in Logan County

As you travel along the grasslands of Logan County, you have probably already noticed one of the many wind turbines spotting the landscape. Colorado has a state initiative to generate more and more clean energy every year, and what that translates to is often more and more wind turbines. But how do they work? Well, wind turbines work on the same principle as a child’s pinwheel, the blades of the pinwheel spin around, same with a wind turbine. When the wind blows against the blades of the turbine, the blades slowly rotate. The blades are connected to a drive shaft inside the large box seen on the top of the tower. The drive shaft turns the generator, which makes the electricity. Each wind turbine operates independently of the others. Each is, essentially, an individual power plant. The turbine has a weather station on the top that tells the wind speed and wind direction. That information is sent to the turbines computer, which moves the top of the turbine so the blades are always facing into the wind. The top of the turbine can turn 360 degrees. Pretty cool, huh? Apart from tax benefits to the county, the landowners receive lease payments, and allows the land to remain in agricultural use. Not to mention it creates no air or water pollution, uses no water, and thus, provides clean energy to thousands of homes.
