739 - Park in Peetz

Welcome to Peetz, Colorado. Originally named Mercer by the Burlington Northern Railroad when they placed a section house and depot here. The name was soon changed by one of the first settlers—Peter Peetz. Peetz was a cattle farmer. The real estate was likely purchased from the railroad, at the reasonable price of $1.25 per acre. Peter Peetz wasn’t alone. At it’s peak, the population was around 500, with over twenty businesses ranging from pool halls to a movie theatre. The Peetz Gazette was founded by Jay Matthews in 1916 and it is noted to have been one of the finest newspapers in the entire state, including Denver.
