This sculpture is titled, The Mask: It exemplifies the traditional theme of comedy and tragedy. It was originally located at the entrance of the old Oak Street Theater, which was home to the Prairie Players, a local theater troupe. If you look closely you’ll notice the crack running up the statue. That crack, or “check” as it referred to, appeared over the period of a week after the face was carved. So what do you do if a giant crack decides to show up midway into a sculpture? Use it of course! Bradford worked the crack into the costume of the sculpture by emphasizing the other folds and bends of the robe. Pretty cool.
