710 - Logan County Courthouse

Welcome to the grand, historic Logan County Courthouse! As you walk in, notice the brass chandeliers, the white-porcelain tiles, and the acanthus leaves that decorate the entrance. Designed by architect John J. Huddart in 1908, the courthouse was built at a cost of $100,000 and dedicated on March 5, 1910, with the sounds of a live orchestra echoing throughout the rotunda. [classical music] You can view framed linen blueprints of the original design on the main floor of the courthouse. Then, venture downstairs to see the work of local artist Gene Carara, who served in the United States Air Force and taught painting and drawing in Sterling Public Schools. His vivid paintings of landscapes and the settlers and Native Americans who lived there will allow you to imagine what early life was like here in Logan County.
Many artists also contributed to the courthouse restoration project in 1984. Susan Gold, from Elysian Glass in Boulder, CO, created a stained glass piece that was included in the original plans for the building, and Ron Abo, an architect from Denver, CO, used a “Gents” sign that hung on the men’s restroom door to re-create a letter pattern used for signs in the courthouse’s interior. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and remains an iconic historic landmark.
