The Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge consists of nearly 20,000 acres of protected land adjacent to the Des Lacs River. It is known for its natural beauty, as well as a haven for thousands of birds as they migrate each year. Traveling on the thirteen-mile Scenic Backway, you will be immersed in nature, surrounded by spectacular views and ample opportunity to witness wildlife, from deer, beavers, and moose to over 250 different species of birds, such as raptors, pelicans, and waterfowl.

The Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge Scenic Backway puts you front and center when migratory birds are passing through. Thousands of snow geese and tundra swans stop here annually in the fall, definitely a spectacle to see.
