151 - Boat Dock Area

Long ago, the Des Lacs River cut a path in the earth resulting in a scenic valley filled with coulees and a series of lakes. Early French trappers named this water Riviere de Lacs or “River of the Lakes” after the three naturally occurring lakes that have always been here. Formed by glacial lakes nearly 10,000 years ago, Des Lacs Lake offers beauty, solitude, and serenity.
The refuge itself can be explored via the scenic backway. Wanting a closer look? Head to the Boat Dock Area, following tree-lined roads that wind you around Middle Des Lacs Lake, where the deepest water within the refuge is typically found. While motorized vehicles are not allowed at Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge, Middle Des Lacs Lake is open for canoeing and kayaking. The surrounding scenery makes it an excellent choice for those wishing to paddle their cares away!
