1348 - Remembered: Delmer Day Elementary School

For the children who grew up in Greensburg, the grade school years meant Delmer Day Elementary. The building opened in 1955 and quickly became a fixture in the lives of local families. It was the kind of place that stayed in memory—the halls that echoed with footsteps, the smell of chalk and floor wax, and the teachers who shaped a lifetime of learning.

As Greensburg grew, so did the school. A new wing was added in 1961, expanding to serve a growing student population.

In 1983, tragedy struck. Beloved Principal Delmer Day was killed in a small plane crash in Kiowa County, along with three others, including Greensburg’s mayor, Crawford Barber, who was 51. Day was 47 years old. Shortly after the loss, the school was renamed Delmer Day Elementary in honor of its leader. Renaming the school recognized his role in shaping the lives of students and the community he served.

By the time most alumni walked its halls, Delmer Day Elementary housed kindergarten through eighth grade, offering a full range of childhood education under one roof.

The campus felt like a world of its own. To the south were the football field and track, where fall afternoons carried the sounds of whistles and cheers. To the east stood the cafeteria, shared by both grade school and high school students, which often hosted school dances and community events. Farther east, the tennis courts rounded out a campus that anchored daily life in town.

For more than fifty years, Delmer Day Elementary marked the rhythm of the school year—from the first bell in September to the start of summer vacation in May. It was where Greensburg’s youngest residents learned, played, and began to understand what it meant to be part of a community.

When the tornado came in 2007, the school was among the buildings lost. In the years that followed, Greensburg rebuilt its schools into a single Kiowa County campus, now serving preschool through twelfth grade on Main Street.

Though the building is gone, its place in the lives of those who attended remains a lasting part of Greensburg’s story.
