1346 - Reimagined: Kiowa County Commons

When the 2007 tornado struck, Kiowa County lost not only homes and businesses but also its most important public spaces. As the county seat, Greensburg needed a facility that could restore essential community services while reflecting the shared vision for a sustainable future. County leaders decided to combine several key resources under one roof, creating a shared space that would serve education, communication, and culture for generations to come.

The Kiowa County Commons became that vision realized. The 20,000-square-foot facility houses the Kiowa County Library, the Kiowa County Historical Museum, Kiowa County Media Center and the Kansas State University Research and Extension Office. Each contributes to learning in a different way, and together they form a hub of connection and knowledge. The Kiowa County Media Center, developed in partnership with Kansas State University, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to a mission to engage, support and empower communities through quality multimedia, technology, education, and training.

Designed to meet LEED Platinum certification, the building reflects Greensburg’s leadership in energy-efficient design. Its systems include a closed-loop geothermal network for heating and cooling, along with thin-film solar panels that generate renewable electricity. The structure’s highly efficient building envelope—its foundation, walls, roof, and windows—maintains stable indoor temperatures and reduces energy use.

Another standout feature is its living roof, where layers of vegetation absorb rainwater, provide insulation, and help moderate air temperature. This design choice reduces heat reflected from surrounding surfaces and encourages biodiversity, even in the heart of town.

Opened to the public in 2011, the Kiowa County Commons stands as an example of how rebuilding can go beyond replacement. It demonstrates how strong partnerships, innovative engineering, and community vision can come together to create something both practical and inspiring.
