1345 - Reimagined: Starlight Park

Starlight Park stands as a celebration of renewal, creativity, and hope. The original City Hall site was destroyed in the 2007 EF5 tornado, leaving a space that for years symbolized both loss and possibility. A decade later, in honor of the tenth anniversary of the storm, a public art committee brought new life to the area by transforming it into a sculpture park dedicated to reflection and inspiration.

Today, Starlight Park features three sculptural works, each carrying its own message of resilience. The most prominent piece, "The Beacon," was designed by local artists and community members. Its cylindrical form is cut with star-shaped openings that cast light in shifting patterns across the ground. At night, the illuminated sculpture glows quietly, a symbol of strength shining through adversity.

Etched into the work is a verse from Isaiah 58:12: “Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities. Then you will be known as a rebuilder of walls and restorer of homes.” The words capture the spirit of Greensburg’s recovery and the deep pride its citizens hold in what has been rebuilt.

Around the sculpture, engraved bricks line the walkways. Each brick bears the name of a donor, sponsor, or supporter who helped make the park a reality. Together, they form a lasting record of the generosity and community spirit that brought Starlight Park to life.

The stars in the park’s name and in the sculpture’s design also honor the Kansas state motto, Ad Astra per Aspera, meaning "To the stars through difficulties." It is a fitting tribute to a community that faced unimaginable hardship and chose to rebuild with vision and purpose.
