1339 - Remembered: 1st Block of Main Street, East Side

The first block of Main Street’s east side was once a bustling business hub in Greensburg. In a town where neighbors knew one another by name, this stretch of storefronts was where people met, browsed, and built memories—each shop adding its own chapter to the story of downtown.

At the south end stood the Robinett Building, a sturdy red-brick landmark that has anchored the block since 1915. Through the decades, it housed a variety of businesses, from retail stores to banks, always serving as a cornerstone of commerce. By the time of the 2007 tornado, it was home to Centera Bank, a familiar and trusted presence for residents and local merchants alike.

Moving north along the block, one would have passed the Twilight Theatre, a centerpiece of entertainment for generations before its devastating loss in 2007. Next to the theatre sat Duckwall’s Variety Store, which opened in 1967 and became a shopping staple for households across Kiowa County. Earlier, that same space had been home to the original Dillons grocery store, before it relocated to a larger facility along Highway 400.

The block was also home to everyday favorites like the Kiowa County Library (Greensburg branch), Starla’s Stitch and Frame, Randall TV and Appliance, and Roses and More. Each storefront had its role, from supplying hardware and home goods to offering books, flowers, and friendly conversation.

Before the storm, this block reflected the small-town spirit that defined Greensburg: a place where errands turned into reunions, and where a walk downtown meant catching up on nearly everyone’s news. Though the east side of Main looks different today, the Robinett Building still stands as a link between the past and present, reminding all who pass that Main Street was—and remains—the heartbeat of Greensburg.
