1338 - Reimagined: Kiowa County United Buildings

In 2009, local business leaders came together with a shared goal: to fill the need for larger retail spaces in downtown Greensburg and strengthen the local economy. The city’s Business Incubator had already helped small businesses find their footing, but there was still a need for affordable, sustainable locations for larger operations.

To meet that need, Kiowa County United formed as a nonprofit organization dedicated to revitalizing local commerce. Through an impressive grassroots effort, the group raised nearly one million dollars in only a few months—most of it from Kiowa County residents and businesses who believed in their community’s future. Their work resulted in the creation of the Kiowa County United retail center, a project that reflects both local pride and environmental commitment.

Constructed using Insulating Concrete Forms (ICF), the center is a model of what has been called “affordable green.” Its design proves that sustainability does not have to come with a high price tag. The building’s thick, insulated walls conserve energy, while each space inside is equipped with energy efficient lighting and dual flush toilets that reduce water consumption. These simple technologies make a big impact, lowering costs for tenants and demonstrating what practical green design can achieve on Main Street.

Today, the Kiowa County United buildings provide affordable space for a variety of businesses and services, helping keep dollars local and the economy strong. The project stands as a reminder that sustainable progress often begins with neighbors working together to meet shared needs.
