1335 - Remembered: Fran’s Antiques

Before it became a destination for antique lovers, the building at 222 South Sycamore Street was home to one of Greensburg’s earliest congregations. The Greensburg Christian Church opened its doors in 1910, built at a cost of eight thousand dollars. A decade later, the congregation expanded, adding the brick columns and double staircases that gave the building its welcoming character. For more than sixty years, those steps carried generations of families through its doors for worship, weddings, funerals, and fellowship.

In 1971, when the Christian Church moved to a new location on South Main Street, Laurel and Fran Petersen purchased the old building and opened Fran’s Antiques. The high ceilings and open rooms that once held church pews became the perfect setting for vintage furniture, collectibles, and carefully kept treasures. For more than three decades, Fran’s was the kind of shop where visitors could lose track of time and leave with something that felt like it had been waiting just for them.

In 2002, Gary and Erica Goodman took over the business, continuing Fran’s legacy and her love of history. They ran the store until May 4, 2007, when the tornado destroyed the building along with much of downtown Greensburg.

Determined to keep that spirit alive, the Goodmans relocated their antiques business to the restored Robinett Building on Main Street. There, the story of both Fran’s and the old Christian Church continues, a reminder of how Greensburg’s past still finds ways to live on through dedicated hands and enduring memories.
