Hi this is Dave Badman, lead designer and creator at BD, located in downtown Grand Forks. BD was awarded the city project to build and install the light you see before you, as well as the others you will see as you walk around downtown.

I'd like to tell you about some of the history I incorporated into this design. The light was designed around the Red River that runs between both Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. Historically before Grand Forks existed, this used to be part of the Great Lake Agassi that covered much of the Red River valley. Through time the lake receded, and what remains is the Red River.

As Grand Forks has developed into fantastic city with a beautiful downtown. The river has shifted. It has flooded the area, and changed with each passing year. The design of the light starts with was the wavy lines cut out of the black pillar. Notice the light you are in front of and compare it to the one right across the street. No two lights in the same, as the Red River is constantly changing. Additionally, take note of the blue line—in 1997, Grand Forks suffered a devastating and historic flood--I've added the blue line around the light as a symbol of the flood that year.

Although this is just one light you are looking at, I encourage you to take each one of them in, and find a favorite or two along the way. Thank you for listening and please continue to explore all of Grand Fork’s Talking Trail, and stop into BD. I look forward to seeing you!
