Welcome to “Pheasants on the Prairie,” a sculpture honoring the popular activity of pheasant hunting in North Dakota--in fact, did you know that you’re not too far from the pheasant capitol of the world? That’s right, along the scenic Canonball River, in the grasslands and buttes of Mott, North Dakota.

Designer and builder Gary Greff created the 40 foot tall rooster, 35 foot tall hen, and 20 foot tall chicks using bent oil well pipes for the skeletons and gravel screening metal mesh for the feathers. Two of the chicks are depicted feeding, perhaps eating seeds, berries, or insects. The rooster and hen remain alert, ready to dart into the safety of shade, tall grasses, or thick cattails should they sense danger. While pheasants prefer to run, they can fly at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour when frightened or chased. Stretch your legs and see how fast you can run! Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled as you drive along this Enchanted Highway, you might notice a pheasant or two along the way.
