The McDonald Douglas F15 Eagle is one of many planes—including P40 Warhawks, Spitfires, Black Widows, and P51s—flown by the Spittin’ Kitten 5th fighter interceptor group which formed in 1942 in Selfridge, Michigan as part of the United States Air Force’s Air Force Reserve Command. They were named for two live lynx kittens, “Spittin’” and “Kitten” obtained by Jack Broughton, one of the 5th Fighter’s commanders in 1963.
Veterans including Dave Smith, Arvid Pomeroy, and Daryl Kerzman have contributed to restoring all of these outdoor aircraft displays. They occasionally open the canopy for kids to climb in and for people to look admire. The museum is thankful for their support and the support of all veterans.
