1063 - Ekalaka Park

This photo shows a section of forest at Ekalaka Park in Montana, where numerous trees have been snapped and stripped, leaving jagged stumps across the hillside. The broken and fallen trees suggest severe storm or tornado damage, set against a backdrop of rolling green hills and standing pines.

Carter County Montana is off the beaten path, away from the hustle and bustle of interstate traffic whose sole focus is often on how to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible. The southeast corner of Montana invites visitors to slow down and appreciate the undulating landscape, a mix of prairie, buttes, and hills. The highest points around Ekalaka give you sweeping views of the greatest mixture of landscapes in Montana. Ekalaka Park sits amongst this stunning country.
Once part of the Sioux National Forest, Ekalaka Park is nestled into the southern edge of the Ekalaka hills. In 1936, the forest service got the ball rolling on a plan to create a park at this location. Members of a civilian conservation corps camp in the area cleared the grounds, established a parking place, and built lavatories. Springs were cleaned out and outdoor fireplaces were constructed for cooking. Their hard work paid off, as this quickly became known as one of the best spots for camping and picnicking in the hills.

Now, in this far-flung corner of present-day Custer National Forest, folks are drawn to the tranquility of nature. If you are looking to escape life in the fast lane, Ekalaka Park offers campsites for you to start your adventure!
