654 - Kim Olson - Sunflower Eye

Hi, I’m Kim. This piece doesn’t have a title. I actually created it many times before. I put it up there and named all of those different ones, and it just sort of got lost. So there isn’t a formal title.
The inspiration comes from the sunflower. When I came to North Dakota, I was very taken by the fields of sunflowers, but primarily how the sunflowers follow the sun. The center of this piece has the sunflower, but it also represents the sun and the relationship between them. Going one step further, the sun has extra meaning as the shape of an iris in the eye. The sun has always been a symbol of human consciousness, so I included it as an element of what is being observed, which is the flower with the facet of an observer, our consciousness. We bring in elements of the universe watching itself, watching you, watching the flower, watching the sun. The bees were a bit of a sigil that I was working on that summer. They don’t have a lot of meaning, but bees and flowers go really well together.
We’re all creators and co-creators of this experience. Art is really an extension of that person’s soul. It’s an extension of who they are. When you doubt your creation, you’re really doubting the universe and what’s inside of you. My advice to anyone is to create without judgment, to create from your heart. You don’t have to share it, but just express it because it’s the nature of who we are.
