1258 - Big Horn County Museum History

History is more than just dusty relics on a shelf. It’s a story filled with emotion, lessons, and often the haunting reminders of what has been. At the Big Horn County Historical Museum, history is not only preserved, but comes alive through exhibits that represent bygone eras.
The museum opened in 1979 on a 22-acre vegetable farm just outside of Hardin, Montana. By 2012, the museum grounds had expanded to 35 acres, home to 24 historic structures that have been rescued from decay and meticulously preserved. Step back in time as you walk through the historic LaForge Cabin, barn, and blacksmith shop. Smell the hand-cut logs neatly chinked into place as you imagine the sound of clanging metal echoing through the air. Take a seat in a doctor’s office from 1915 or experience a true Crow tepee.
Alongside these culture-rich buildings are exhibits constructed to house horse-drawn equipment, an extensive collection of tractors, classic automobiles, and other farm implements. Immerse yourself in the history of Fort Custer and the rich culture of the Plains Indians. Explore tales of the wild west through the eyes of Will James, a famous cowboy writer and owner of the nearby Rocking R Ranch. From the Trading Post to the Photo Shop and from cowboys to Indians, there’s history for everyone at the Museum.
The museum complex continues to develop and guests will see the latest efforts as they tour the site. The continuing development and restoration is a testimony to the commitment to preserve the rich heritage of Big Horn county.
