1345 - Kevin Red Star Gallery

In the charming, historic downtown of Red Lodge, Montana, the Kevin Red Star Gallery occupies a turn-of-the-century building featuring an antique sandstone facade. Large display windows frame the entrance, offering a glimpse of the art inside. This unique storefront is situated right on Broadway, fitting seamlessly amidst an eclectic mix of neighbors. Kevin Red Star, a respected member of the Crow (Apsáalooke) Nation, is the gallery’s owner and artist, continuously bringing a shining, authentic vision of his centuries-old culture to contemporary canvas.
I was born beneath the wide skies of Lodge Grass, Montana, where the land itself tells stories. My mother’s hands were always busy, embroidering, beading, bringing Crow designs to life on fringed shawls that moved like the prairie wind. My father filled our home with music and tales of courage of horses, or the old ways. Between them, I learned that art could speak without words.
At sixteen, I left home to study at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. There, surrounded by young Native artists from across the country, I began to see painting as more than expression, it was a way to carry my people’s history forward. Each brushstroke became a thread connecting the past to the present.
The symbols in my work, lightning zigzags, mountain lines, medicine spots, and circles of vision, are the language of my ancestors. They are not merely designs; they are prayers, stories, and memories handed down through generations. When I paint, I honor those who came before me and those who will follow.
I’ve always seen myself as a recorder of my people, much like Charlie Russell once recorded the West as he knew. But my stories rise from within the Crow Nation, from the rivers and plains that raised me, from the songs my father played, and from the strength of my mother’s needle.
Step inside the gallery and spend time with the paintings, horses charged with motion, tipis glowing against open plains, and Crow symbols alive with meaning. At the Kevin Red Star Gallery, you’re invited to immerse yourself in the history, stories, and living culture of the Crow people through my art. My paintings are shown throughout the Rocky Mountains, with additional works on display at the Courtney Collins Fine Art Gallery in Big Sky, Montana and the Cawdrey Gallery in Whitefish, Montana.
