Welcome to the Rotunda in the Government Center. Constructed in the early 90s, this building houses several Olmsted County services, the Adult Detention Center, District Court, and City Hall. Designed by KKE Architects, this domed gallery connects the County and City wings and serves as an entrance to the shared chambers overlooking the Zumbro River. Speaking of the mighty Zumbro, the construction coincided with the completion of the community's flood control project, a response to the historic 1978 flood.

The building’s design emphasizes symmetry and simplicity, with restrained ornamentation. The ground level features larger, heavier cast stone, while the upper floors transition to refined brickwork, reflecting classical architectural principles.

Inside, the design aims for grandeur with modest materials. The voluminous loggias incorporate repeating vertical elements reminiscent of a classical colonnade. Detailing is restrained, limited to drywall recesses, accent paint, decorative guardrails, ornamental light fixtures, and unique terrazzo designs. The bulbs are even changed in the light fixtures to highlight specific events, like Operation Green Light. Green bulbs are installed in November every year to honor our local veterans.

At your feet, the unique terrazzo design features a north star, symbolizing our local governments' connection to the State. The embedded map reflects Olmsted County and its major communities, preserving a snapshot from the time of construction. While these communities have evolved and will continue to do so, the beauty of this space remains timeless. As you walk outside to traverse to your next stop on the Med-City Talking Trail, look up and you will observe a beautiful patina on the copper dome showing how age does beautify.
