1163 - Oval Twisters by Lyman Whitaker

It’s no surprise that nature provides inspiration in countless ways, especially in the world of art and design. For Lyman Whitaker, nature’s awe and wonder has been sparking creativity and imagination in him for decades. For much of his life, he was an artist, though really found his passion in the 1980s when he discovered wind sculptures. His work has since been placed in countries around the world, including right here in Rochester, Minnesota. Lyman Whitaker’s sculpture, Oval Twister, overlooks the Zumbro River and was donated to the city by Greg and Sharon Centling.
Looking at the sculpture, which was installed in 2005, it’s easy to see where his inspiration comes from. The plant kingdom has been a critical part of his work because, for years, plants have influenced the shapes of his sculptures. Often referred to as whirly gigs, the best way to experience Whitaker’s art is to unroll a picnic blanket and settle in to observe how the wind dances through the sculptures. In time, the shapes and the rhythm reveal themselves, creating a meditative experience between you, the wind, and the art. In a fast-paced world, you leave feeling connected to nature, with a deep sense of tranquility, peace, and quiet.
